Microplastic Removal

Water issue adressed: Too dirty

Currently the existence of microplastics in different bodies of water is becoming a problem for the ecosystem of many species, including humans. For this reason, we evaluated the efficiency of ferrofluid as a technology for the extraction of microplastics in water samples.

This is how I came up with the idea for this project:

After watching a video of Dr. Warner, about a project where he removed oil from seawater using magnetite particles, we came up with our idea because plastic is a derivative of petroleum. We wanted to prove that plastic, oil and magnetite joined and could be removed because they are non-polar.
