FLOODWISE is an innovative automated flood management system designed to mitigate flooding and repurpose water efficiently. The system integrates a flood indicator, a biofiltration setup, and an eco roof. These components work in synergy to convert floodwater and rainwater into usable water for non-potable purposes such as washing and flushing. By combining real-time flood monitoring with sustainable water treatment and storage solutions, FLOODWISE aims to enhance urban water resilience and promote eco-friendly water usage practices.

Their project ‘Bithermal Water Distillation Device’ used the readily available solar

energy in the Tropics to purify water.

The project was adjudged the best by the panel of jury because it has the ability to make

potable water available to all because it is cost-effective, economically viable, practicable

and scalable.

Water pollution constitutes a major set-back to the availability of safe water for consumption and other uses, especially in under developed countries.

In consonance with this year’s theme, “Seeing the unseen: The value of water”, I have the intention of solving this great menace. In this paper, we will have an insight into certain problems we all encounter in everyday life and how they affect us. SoCAC (Solar Cyanotoxins and Aromatic Contaminants) Water Purifier stands as the solution to these problems. This paper will also highlight the importance and applications of SoCAC Water Purifier over other methods of water purification.

NATRIFIER DISPENSER is a natural purification system that helps to purify water polluted with petroleum product using locally sources materials such as Moringa Oleifera seed and granulated activated charcoal. This project also entails development of ‘’Natrifier’’ a sustainable mobile water purification flask for families living in affected communities to purify polluted water themselves.

The use of chemicals in water treatment, which is a popular practice all over the world, contributes to climate change. For example, chlorine reacts to form tetra-halo-methane which are green house gases and carcinogenic. This project used common plants (Moringa olifera and Jatropha curcas), to treat various contaminated water and with GSM monitoring system we were able to evaluate the effectiveness of the pollution-control measures. With this technique, all the stations will operate in real time, and central station can access data from any of the above stations using GPRS/GSM or 3G cellular services. This work highlights the fact that our solution is in nature and this project if scaled-up, is capable of meeting the safe water needs of communities.

The Water Purifier combines purification processes in Chemistry, radiation and electrical effects on organisms in Physics to purify water. The water purifier has filtering stage where the sediments, (chloride) odour, colour, heavy and toxic compounds are removed, followed by the current passing electrode and UV stages where disinfection of the water from microbes takes place. The water is then re-filtered with a 1µm filter to remove the dead microbes to make the water is safe for consumption.
Water samples contaminated with heavy metals, pathogens and other contaminants which passed through the water purifier, came out pure and safe for potable uses. The device is cost effective and efficient and if scaled up, could make potable water available to all.

Our project utilized readily available local materials- coconut (Cocus nocifera) husk and costus plant (Costus afer), to purify water for domestic purposes. The fibers of coconut and Costus afer plants were used to purify dirty/impure water obtained from shallow wells from Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The purification process was more efficient when the fibres from the coconut plant were placed between the leaf fibres and the stem fibres of the Costus afer. This was because the coconut fibers removed the chlorophyll from Costus afer leaves. The filtrate has a characteristic colourless nature due to the fibers ability to absorb metals with the hydroxyl group (OH) present in them.
