Enhancing Plant Salinity Stress Tolerance Through Rhizobacteria-Mediated Salinity Mitigation allowing brackish water irrigation and saving freshwater for domestic use.

What is known as the aftermath of intensified flood events has similar impact on life below water. This increases the entry of fine sediment particles into streams as well as periodically dried soil due to a higher erosion and sediment mobility, combined with extensive agricultural land use along the water edges. This endangers key-stone species especially the brown trout salmo trutta fario due to clogged gravel-gap-systems they need to spawn. Within this study, a sediment trap was developed as a method for long-term sampling during spawning time and tested in five Bavarian streams. Furthermore, the impact of these sediment compositions on the development of brown trout eggs was determined to improve the success of in-situ-floating incubators to restore their populations.

Textiles made of synthetic fibres release microplastics into the water when washed. I was able to detect the particles in the wastewater and developed an appropriate filter. The filter material was chosen from a special laundry bag’s fabric. I designed the filter case on the computer using CAD software. On this basis, a company produced two prototypes. First, the filters were connected externally to the washing machine’s drain. In a second step, I used CAD software to design and create a filter, which was subsequently integrated into the washing machine. Water analyses confirmed its effectiveness. Currently, a patent is pending.

The importance of soils for the environment and for humans is often underestimated. Soils are an integral component of nutrient and water cycles and ultimately constitute our basis of life. In our project, we have comparatively analyzed the two energy crops corn and cup plant, an agricultural newcomer, with regard to water retention, nitrate filtration capacity, influence on humus formation and potential for reintegration of depleted soils. After numerous laboratory and field trials the cultivation of the cup plant can be recommended especially in the context of climate change and in areas where erosion is prominent and water protection is needed.

We have developed an experimental setup that can automatically and autonomously investigate the phototaxis of unicellular green algae. The fields to be tested are phototaxis in terms of wavelength and intensity of the triggering light. Other parameters to be considered are contrast, time of day, cell concentration and the speed of the source of light.
With our apparatus we investigate the phototaxis of the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.
